The Goo Goo Dolls were scrappy post-Replacements rockers before their mainstream breakthrough with the wistful, acoustic-guitar-driven "Name." Now, they're best-known for their ballads and midtempo rockers, from "Iris" to "Slide."

If you're on the fence about their co-headlining tour with Daughtry, at Comerica Theatre on Sunday, Aug. 3, here are three reasons to go.

1 In the 27 years since their self-titled debut, they've managed to rack up a handful of surefire audience sing-alongs, including "Name" and "Better Days," that could, in theory, take you back to key points in your own life through those 27 years.

2 They're still a major force in adult Top 40 radio, where "Iris," "Slide" and their spirited cover of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" from 2004 all topped the charts. Two songs from last year's "Magnetic" — "Rebel Beat" and "Come to Me" — were Top 20 hits in that format.

3 Their bread and butter is ballads, but they haven't turned their back on rock and roll just yet. Among the many highlights of "Magnetic" are the anthemic U2-with-power-chords rocker "When the World Breaks Your Heart," and the rollicking power-pop hooks of "Bringing on the Light." And the electronic textures that flavor several of the album's more midtempo tracks add an interesting wrinkle to their trademark sound. There's no sign of the kids responsible for such first-album highlights as "Hammerin' Eggs (The Metal Song)" or the hardcore-flavored "Torn Apart," but that was 27 years ago.
